R486 Safe Operation Training for MEWPs
The R486 MEWP training enables operators to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to safely use mobile elevating work platforms.
Operational objectives
Acquire the necessary knowledge for the safe operation of MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) according to CNAM recommendation R486.
Enable the employer to issue an operating permit.
To be able to:
- Follow general safety guidelines.
- Identify the risks associated with the use of the equipment.
- Safely operating a MEWP in different environments.
- Perform basic maintenance.
- Implement safety rules regarding the different energy sources used.
Regulatory obligations
CNAMTS Recommendation R486. Article L6313-1 and R4323-55 of the Labour Code.
Prerequisites and practical advice
Must be over 18 years of age.
Good command of the language in which the training is provided.
Proficiency in basic mathematical operations.
Practical advice:
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Meeting room (in-house) and PEMP in compliance (in-house).
Target audience
People who need to use self-propelled, ride-on equipment.
Terms and conditions for accessing training
- Upon request by phone, email, or website.
- Via the pre-registration form (inter-training) and upon validation of the positioning form.
- Deadline according to the schedule of inter-sessions: 1 week before the start of the training.
- Timeframe for in-house sessions: to be agreed upon together.

Theoretical part (knowledge):
- Regulations, duties and responsibilities.
- Technology.
- Categories and suitability.
- Characteristics and stability of MEWPs.
- Taking up the position.
- Traffic.
- Stabilization.
- Operation and monitoring of a MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform).
- General safety rules.
- Storage.
Practical part (know-how):
- To carry out an analysis, a reconnaissance of the route to be taken.
- Proceed with the on-duty check (PPE, equipment checks and examination).
- Maneuvering the MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform).
- Monitor the maneuver, communicate with the operator.
- Parking maneuver.
- Storage at the end of the shift.
- Maintenance and energy supply.
Duration
- 1 day (7 hours), theory: 4 hours, practice: 3 hours.
- Sign-in per half-day.
Profile of participants
Trainers recognized for their pedagogical and technical skills and possessing extensive field experience.
Methods used
- Multimedia presentations, practical case studies, exchanges and feedback.
- Practical exercises and maneuvers on a training course.
Evaluation methods
- Theoretical assessment using a multiple-choice questionnaire.
- Assessment of know-how through practical workshops, case studies and simulations (assessment grid).
Number of participants
- Intra: 1 minimum and 5 maximum per session.
- Intermediate: 3 minimum and 5 maximum per session.
